The Milan Pact for Reading is the instrument chosen by the Municipality of Milan to launch a widespread action of contact and knowledge between readers and all the protagonists of the book supply chain, so as to restore value to the act of reading as an essential moment for the construction of a new idea of ​​citizenship.

With this choice we want to relaunch the role of Milan's cultural system in a local, national and international perspective. The Pact is entrusted with the management of activities to promote reading, involving actors - public and private - who share the idea that reading, in its various forms, is a common good in which to invest for the cultural growth of the individual and society. society, an extraordinary tool for innovation and the economic and social development of the city.

The Milan Pact for Reading was signed on 23 October 2015 by:

1. Ministry of Cultural Heritage and Activities and Tourism;
2. Department of Culture (Municipality of Milan);
3. Department of Social Policies and Health Culture (Municipality of Milan);
4. Department of Education and Instruction (Municipality of Milan);
5. Center for books and reading Lombardy regional school office;
6. Italian Library Association;
7. Italian Publishers Association;
8. Italian Booksellers Association;
9. Association of Milanese Independent Bookshops;
10. Committee Bookcity Milan;
11. Formentini laboratory for publishing.

To these was added in 2019 the signing of theAssociation of Independent Publishers.

Starting November 20, 2021, in the occasion of the tenth edition of BookCity Milan, the Milan Pact for reading has started a development process, in line with the value of proximity that animates the idea of ​​the "city 15 minutes away", welcoming the membership of some Condominium libraries in Milan.

Read aloud

Among the Pact's flagship initiatives, reading aloud is a well-established tool for the active involvement of citizens and for conveying the pleasure that books can offer. This project is based on the participation of volunteer readers, trained in reading aloud techniques that make their interventions engaging and effective, available to continuously commit to spreading reading in the city. These initiatives take place widely in schools, libraries and in various places of daily life: clinics and hospitals, recreational centers for young people and the elderly, prisons.
