Transferring ashes or bone remains outside the Municipality of Milan: how it works

Ashes or bone remains can be transported from Milan in another municipality or foreign state:

  • for burial in a cemetery;
  • because entrusted to: spouse or closest relative residing outside Milan (ashes only);
  • for their dispersion (only ashes).

For the transfer it is essential to have the authorizations described case by case. The procedures can be carried out directly by the citizen or by a delegated funeral company.

The transfer of the body to another municipality before the death is confirmed is possible subject to authorization from the health management of the facility where the death occurred or from the attending physician, in the case of death at home.

For this type of transfer, prior authorization from the Municipality of Milan is not required
