Transfer ashes or bone remains abroad after ordinary/extraordinary exhumation or exhumation from a cell or columbarium

The transfer of ashes or remains to another State after ordinary or extraordinary exhumation or after an exhumation is authorized by the Municipality where the deceased person is buried, with the release of:

  • mortuary passport: if the deceased person is headed to one of the countries adhering to the Berlin Convention of 10/02/1937 (Austria, Belgium, Chile, Egypt, France, Germany, Mexico, Portugal, Czech Republic, Democratic Republic of the Congo (formerly Zaire), Romania, Slovakia, Switzerland and Turkey);
  • decree authorizing transport abroad, for all other countries.

Request

For the issuing of the mortuary passport prepare:

  • a tax stamp request of €16,00, presented directly by a relative of the deceased person or by an authorized funeral company; 
  • a €16,00 revenue stamp to be applied to the mortuary passport;
  • consent of: spouse/civil partner or, failing this, the closest relative. If there are multiple relatives of the same degree, everyone's consent is required, accompanied by photocopies of the valid identity documents of each signatory relative.

In case of exhumation from a cell or columbarium prepare:

  • consent of whoever has the concession for the building;
  • in the event of the latter's death, the consent of the spouse or, in his absence, of the closest relative is necessary. If there are multiple relatives of the same degree, everyone's consent is required, accompanied by photocopies of the valid identity documents of each signatory relative.

In case of delegate the company also needs:

  • proxy signed by a relative of the deceased person;
  • copy of the delegating person's identity document.

For the issue of the authorization decree for transport abroad need:

  • all the documentation listed previously;
  • no impediment to the entry of the deceased person from the Consulate or Embassy of the State to which he or she is headed.

Only when requested by the destination State you must:

  • the international model death certificate drawn up in multiple languages ​​issued by the Municipality Registry Office.
