Transfer of bodies, ashes, remains

For the transfer of bodies, ashes or remains, a transport authorization is required:

  • if the transport takes place following the funeral
    the authorization is issued by the Municipality of death;
  • if the transport concerns deceased persons who already have a placement
    the authorization lies with the burial municipality.

Which deceased people can be transferred to Milan?
Deceased persons who were living residents of Milan and who have not already found another burial can be transferred to Milan, after having obtained authorization from the municipal offices for burial in one of the city cemeteries if:

  • they died outside the Municipality of Milan;
  • they had lost their residence in Milan because they were hospitalized in healthcare facilities outside Milan and therefore died outside the municipal territory. In this case the request must be accompanied by a communication from the health management of the nursing home or clinic which documents the date of hospitalization and the stay in the facility until the time of death;
  • are registered in the Registry of Residents Abroad (Aire) of the Municipality of Milan, regardless of the date of registration;
  • they died in detention with their last residence in Milan before the start of the detention regime.

Deceased persons who do not have the right to burial in Milan must not be taken to the city cemeteries for storage. Transport to storage is subject to prior authorization being issued.
