Funerals and burials: information and services

After submitting the death report (for further information consult the service "Submit the death report") it is possible to organize the funeral by contacting the Municipality of Milan directly or by delegating an authorized funeral company.

Anyone requesting a funeral service acts in the name and on behalf of the person entitled to dispose of the deceased and with their prior consent.

The main types of burial are:

  • the inhumation
  • burial in a columbarium or family tomb
  • the various possible destinations of the ashes in the case of cremation.

The office procedures relating to burial and cremation are carried out when the funeral is arranged and can be handled directly by the citizens or by a delegated funeral company.

Unless otherwise arranged by relatives, the cemeteries of the Municipality of Milan welcome:

  • deceased persons living in the municipal area, even if they died elsewhere;
  • people who died in the municipal area, even if they were living residents of another municipality;
  • people from Milan who have left their residence because they have been admitted to healthcare facilities which require their patients to transfer their personal data. In this case they are considered residents in all respects;
  • Milanese people registered with Aire of the Municipality of Milan, regardless of the date of registration;
  • people who died in detention with their last residence in Milan, before the start of the detention regime.

For justified reasons, the Municipal Administration can authorize burial in Milanese cemeteries also for non-residents who died outside the Municipality.

It is possible to choose the burial cemetery, compatibly with the availability of existing spaces in the structures at the time of the request, with the exception of the Baggio Cemetery which has limitations.

Family graves
Burial in family tombs is permitted regardless of the place of residence and death of the deceased.

Funerals take place on the following days and times:

  • every day of the year, excluding Sundays and holidays, at 9:00, 11:00 and 14:45
  • for deaths occurring in the home only, they are also celebrated on Sundays and public holidays, at 9:00 and 11:00, subject to the consent of the parish priest in the case of the celebration of a religious rite

The time must however be agreed with the Municipality based on:

  • availability of the parish, if used for the religious rite
  • planning of cemetery activities (and the crematorium, in the case of cremation).

The prices of funerals organized directly between private companies and customers may vary depending on the supplies chosen, the services requested and the delegated company.

Contact the Municipality
The Municipality of Milan provides an agreed service with predefined characteristics and at a standard price, thanks to an agreement with some funeral companies, the agreed funeral.

In special cases the cost of the funeral is supported entirely by the Municipality.

1) If the practices are carried out directly by the citizens

  • in the case of death at home and in the case of a request for cremation:
    burial permit or death certificate issued by the Municipality at the time of reporting the death
  • if the death occurred in hospital
    burial permit or death certificate issued by the Municipality at the time of reporting the death
  • in the case of transport of the coffin to home or church
    request with a tax stamp of €16,00, with attached copy of a valid identity document of the delegating person (see form: transport of coffin to church or home).
  • in the case of a deceased person in storage at the civic morgue: see the section Civic Morgue.

2) In case the company presents itself

  • all documents listed in point 1;
  • delegation by the person requesting the funeral service for the deceased person;
  • copy of a valid identity document of the person delegating.

The choice of type and place of burial is also part of organizing the funeral, the options for which are described below.
 

From 1 December 2022 it is no longer operational the Banca Intesa San Paolo branch, located on the first floor of the building in via Larga 12.

Therefore:

  • payment for funeral and cemetery services can be made via debit or credit card at the front-office counters of the Funeral and Cemetery Services Area as this is the main payment method that ensures maximum speed, traceability and distribution;
  • the operations of the branches of Banca Intesa San Paolo (Municipal Treasury) in the municipal building in via Silvio Pellico, 16 will remain unchanged. Opening hours: Monday to Thursday, from 08 to 30 - closed on Fridays.
