Alzheimer's Network

The Municipality of Milan, in collaboration with ATS Milano-Città Metropolitana, health and social-health bodies, and various Third Sector entities, has activated a Network made up of coordinated activities on the topic of cognitive decline and dementia since 2013.
In addition to these activities described below on this page, the following psychosocial services/interventions are present to support the stay of the person with cognitive impairment at home and to support families. Some services are also dedicated to elderly people, with a view to prevention.

Il “Permanent panel on home care support for people suffering from Alzheimer's disease and other dementias”, active for several years, was established as a forum for discussion on issues relating to dementia and for sharing choices for the achievement of the following main objectives:

  • comparison with the different subjects represented
  • implementation of the reference Welfare Development Plan
  • support for the integration of health and social-health policies
  • dissemination and implementation of the principles and values ​​expressed in the "Charter of Health Rights of Persons with Cognitive Impairment" (downloadable from the "Attachments" section on this page) to strengthen and promote a culture of respect for the rights of people with cognitive impairment.

Below are the Third Sector Bodies that participate in the Alzheimer's Permanent Roundtable and the Municipalities where they carry out free interventions in person or remotely.

The Alzheimer Observatoryr is a multidisciplinary working group established to achieve the following main objectives:

  • in-depth study of psychosocial, juridical, legal and regulatory, epidemiological and scientific issues relating to the topic of dementia
  • promotion of socio-health integration
  • reflection on the activities of the Alzheimer Network and on possible improvements
  • promotion of a new culture of dementia. In this perspective, the Observatory has developed the "Charter of Health Rights of Persons with Cognitive Impairment" (downloadable from the "Attachments" section on this page), with the function of fighting stigma and stimulating the improvement of the quality of care and care and respect for the right to health of family members too.

World Alzheimer's Day and Month

September is World Alzheimer's Month and September 21st is World Alzheimer's Day, established in 1994 by the World Health Organization (WHO) and Alzheimer's Disease International (ADI), the international federation of Alzheimer's associations.

The institution of these anniversaries testifies to the growth of an international movement that aims to develop sensitivity and awareness and, at the same time, reduce the stigma surrounding dementia-related diseases.

Every year these anniversaries bring together patients, families, operators, associations and public institutions all over the world in initiatives and events with these objectives.

These are the events organized by the Municipality's Alzheimer Network in recent years:

  • On 21 September 2017, Conference "Alzheimer's between myths and reality" to Palazzo Marino, to clarify the multiplicity of information that "makes news", inform on some aspects of the phenomenon and the related social implications and to report on the usefulness of psychosocial interventions
  • 21 September 2018, Conference “Figures for memory. Different professionals for a multi-component approach”, at the Civic Aquarium of Milan, in which professionals who work for the care and support of the patient and the family described the specific interventions of their profession
  • On September 23 of the same year, “Art as a resource and communication” at the Paolo Pini Art Museum (MAPP), activities for people with cognitive impairment and their families, conducted by Third Sector organizations operating in the Alzheimer's Network, to test the potential of psycho-social interventions.
  • September 26, 2019, Round Table “The right to be listened to and participate in choices: the DAT (Advance Treatment Provisions)”, held at the Civic Aquarium where, starting from law 219 of 2017 on informed consent and DAT, experts in different disciplines discussed the right to exercise freedom of choice in all moments of life.
  • In 2020, the Alzheimer Network, in collaboration with Third Sector Bodies, conducted acognitive investigation on psychosocial interventions remotely carried out in the first months of the health emergency, reported - in full version and in extract - in the "Attachments".
  • In 2022 the Alzheimer Network, in collaboration with some Third Sector organisations, conducted a reflection path with a group of family members and with a group of operators, starting from the Charter of Health Rights of Persons with Cognitive Decay created by the Alzheimer Observatory of the Municipality.
