XXIII DAY OF MEMORY



On January 27th, Milan mobilizes, on the occasion of Memorial Day, to commemorate the victims of the Holocaust.

To keep alive the memory of the tragic events that Jews, homosexuals, Sinti and Roma, political opponents and disabled people suffered in the extermination camps, and to ensure that the mistakes made in the past are never made again, the city through the municipal administration and through many associations it organizes initiatives open to all towns and citizens, spread throughout the territory.

Monday 23 January, at 14 pm, in the Clock Room Palazzo Marino, the Mayor of Milan Giuseppe Sala, together with the Senator for life and honorary president of the Stumbling Blocks Committee Liliana Segre, will present the schedule of events organized for Remembrance Day 2023.
The live broadcast will be visible on the channels Facebook e YouTube of the Shoah memorial in Milan.

A novelty linked to Remembrance Day will circulate around the city: thanks to the collaboration of Atm the livery of a Sirietto tram on line 9, which terminates at the Central Station, has been personalized with an original image dedicated to Remembrance Day and the writing "27 January - Remembrance Day and "Shoah Memorial - Platform 21-Central Station ”. A tribute from the city to a place of memory so that its existence and location, in Piazza Edmondo J. Safra, is known to everyone, Milanese and tourists. 

Among the numerous initiatives that will be held there will be the laying of new Stumbling Stones on January 23 and March 6, 2023. 
In particular, in the first months of 2023 26 new stones will be laid in memory of the same number of Milanese deported and murdered in the Nazi concentration camps; bringing the number of "stumbles" encountered in Milan to 171.

For the third consecutive year, these "stumbles" also have a digital narrative declination through the “Instagram History” project, created thanks to the collaboration between the Stumbling Stones Committee - Milan and theEuropean Institute of Design, with the patronage of City of Milan and the support of Life Senator Liliana Segre.

In addition to the institutional initiatives of the municipal administration with the Laying of wreaths at the Ex Albergo Regina, in via Silvio Pellico, as mentioned, there are many initiatives promoted by the city associations.

SEA, hosts and promotes an exhibition project curated bySons of the Shoah Association. In fact, it will be inaugurated on January 25th the photographic exhibition “The Righteous Among the Nations” at Milan Linate Airport.

On January 27th, Wikimedia organizes, with the Task Force for the study of the Holocaust, an Editathon in the morning at the Casa della Memoria in Milan, while in the afternoon the Conference will be held at Palazzo Realeː MEMORiANDUMː Remembrance Resilience Resistance.

Il Holocaust Memorial for some time it has hosted a library open to the neighborhood. They will take place there two days of guided tours and it will be possible to see the exhibition set up for the occasion and dedicated to the Hundred Righteous of the World. 

This year the initiatives for Remembrance Day are part of an important anniversary: ​​the twentieth anniversary of the birth of the Garden of the Righteous of the World in Milan (2003-2023). In addition to promoting guided tours of the Garden of the Righteous, Gariwo offers a very rich offer of initiatives.

L'Brera Academy of Fine Arts will curate an exhibition in different spaces, while the House of Memory organizes the "Memory Week" at the headquarters in Via Confalonieri 14.

The 29 January UCEI - the Union of Italian Jewish Communities organizes the RUN FOR MEM, a moment through which to remember the memory of the Shoah by participating in a non-competitive sports race.

Events are also organized at Teatro alla Scala, Giuseppe Verdi Conservatory, Opera House, To Pime theaters e Bruno Munari, at Casa della Memoria and in 9 Town Halls. And then the Garden of the Righteous, North Park. It is also mobilizedUniversity, with a double appointment on the 27th.
Palazzo Marino will welcome, on January 27, a representative of students from the city schools and January 24 at 17:30 p.m concert for the 20th anniversary of the Garden of the Righteous.
