How postal voting works

Sending of the electoral package by the Consulate

Close to the elections, the consulates send voters and electors a package containing:

  • the electoral certificate
  • the ballot papers
  • two envelopes, one stamped and one blank.

How to vote

The voter, having received the package with the ballots:

  1. casts his vote on the ballot papers
    - the vote is expressed by drawing a mark on the chosen list and, in any case, in the rectangle that contains it
    - it is possible to express two preference votes in the divisions to which two or more deputies or senators are assigned and one preference vote in the others
    - the preference vote validly expressed for a candidate is considered as a vote for the same list if the voter has not made another mark in another space on the ballot paper
  2. he inserts the cards into the small envelope and closes it
  3. in the large stamped envelope, insert:
    - the coupon detached from the electoral certificate (proving the exercise of the right to vote)
    - the small envelope containing only the ballot papers
  4. send everything to the competent Consulate.

Delivery of ballots and validity of the vote

  • Envelopes received at the Consulate by 16:00 pm local time on the Thursday before the date established for voting in Italy will be considered valid.
  • it is up to the consulates to send the envelopes received to Italy by 16pm on the Thursday before election Sunday. Ballots arriving late will be burned.

In case of failure to receive the package

Anyone who has not received the electoral package 14 days before the election date can request it by showing up in person at their consular office.
