Registry office. Sofia and Leonardo remain the most chosen names

In the first three months of 2022, 2.261 children were born

Milan, August 13 2022 - According to data provided by the Integrated Statistical System of the Municipality of Milan, Milanese parents choose to remain faithful to the more traditional names for their children. Here, then, as has been happening steadily since 2015, for the small new residents the most frequent are Sofia and Leonardo.
In fact, out of one hundred children born in 2021, the most chosen name was Leonardo (4,51%), followed by Tommaso (3,47%) and Edoardo (2,94%). For girls, the names preferred by parents are Sofia (2,95%), Beatrice (2,18%) and Giulia (2,08%).

The first half of this year (provisional data) does not change the podium: Leonardo and Sofia remain at the top, but for the boys Edoardo replaces Tommaso, while for the girls Ginevra stands out in third place instead of Giulia.

As for the surnames present in the city, the Chinese Hu dominates in the foreign community, followed by Mohamed and Chen. And in the first six months of this year the trend of 2020 and 2021 is confirmed, whereby the surname Hu exceeds the 4.760 Rossi with 4.011 residents.
Distinguishing between female and male surnames, the Rossi ladies are more (2.118) than the Colombos (1.807) and the Ferraris (1.692), while the Mohameds (2.356) are more than the Rossis (1.893), the Ahmeds (1.601) and the Colombos (1.551).

It should be noted that, although Hu is the most widespread in Milan, this figure must be evaluated considering the lower percentage impact that the foreign population has on the total Milanese population (2,4% of the total, with approximately 32 thousand Chinese residents out of almost 1,4 million) and the fact that among the population of Chinese origin residing in the city there is a greater concentration of people with the same surname compared to those of Italian origin. For the latter, influenced by the variety of surnames, we find Rossi on the podium, followed by Colombo and Ferrari.
