Statistics on Milanese agriculture

Source: Istat, 6th General Agricultural Census, 2010

Agricultural production in the Municipality of Milan affects a significant segment of the overall city area. On an extension of 18.175 hectares, the Utilized Agricultural Area (UAA) consists of 2.910 hectares. The 2019 Territorial Government Plan provides that 3.225.735 mXNUMX are allocated to agriculture.

With its 117 active companies, the concentration of agricultural activities in the Milan area is among the largest in the sector.

The land is mainly used for arable crops (cereals and alternate fodder), meadows and pastures and, to a minimal extent, for woody crops. The main crops consist of arable land (89%) and permanent grassland (8,5%).

The most widespread productions concern raw products such as rice and corn, which require processing in industrial plants.

The prevailing distribution channel is that of large-scale retail trade (GDO), even if direct sales have emerged decisively as a current phenomenon.
