Bactivacco farmhouse

What do you find in the farmhouse

Cascina Battivacco is an Educational Farm accredited by the Lombardy Region. It organizes events for children and families such as summer camps, equestrian education, educational gardens and other activities related to the environment and rural occupations.

The visit to the farm is free on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays from 10:00 to 12:00 and from 15:00 to 18:00. On other days, visits are carried out by appointment and by paying a fee. Closed in the central two weeks of August.

In recent years, agritourism catering and hospitality activities in rooms and apartments have started.

Cascina Battivacco has an ancient origin: it already existed in the 12th century with the name "Monasterium de Bativachia S. Eusebi cum S. Salvatore", part of the parish church of Cesano Boscone.

However, a good part of its structure dates back to the 19th century, when it was expanded to accommodate growing agricultural needs (stables, barns and warehouses). Even today it has a closed courtyard conformation, typical of Lombard rural settlements.

The farmhouse is located on the outskirts of Milan, in the Southern Agricultural Park, in an area rich in water between the Naviglio Grande and the Naviglio Pavese. Until the 800th century, the area was characterized by a large network of canals derived largely from the Southern Lambro, indispensable for agricultural purposes and as a driving force for the operation of mills and presses.

Since 1965 it has been home to the company managed by the Fedeli family, who have handed down a great vocation for agriculture for generations. In addition to the breeding of beef cattle, the production has specialized in the cultivation of Carnaroli rice, the basic ingredient for the preparation of the risotto typical of the Milanese culinary tradition. Thanks to eco-compatible cultivation techniques, the large quantity of irrigation water and its excellent properties, rice production is of high quality and respectful of the environment.

The area cultivated with rice extends over approximately 150 hectares and is periodically affected by crop rotation, an ancient and natural strategy for controlling some weeds typical of paddy fields. Rice production is estimated at 15.000 rice dishes daily.

In 2010 the South Milan Agricultural Park awarded the company the "Agricultural Company - Producer of Environmental Quality" brand.
