Area B: Euro 5 diesel, activate the online platform to request the exemption for the car change

Milan, November 28 2022 – The Council has approved some changes to the Area B regulations for owners of Euro 5 diesel engines, as announced in recent days by Palazzo Marino and in line with the motion approved in the Metropolitan City. The decision was made to meet the particular difficulties of purchasing a new non-polluting vehicle and to allow greater entry to those with low incomes, as well as to facilitate those who use interchange parking and car-pooling.

The new rules will be valid both for Milanese citizens and for non-residents.

In particular, it will once again be possible to request an exemption from the circulation of Euro 5 diesel vehicles for owners who have signed, or will sign by 31 March 2023, a long-term purchase, leasing or rental contract. The Euro 5 vehicle will be able to continue to circulate until the arrival of the new car (in any case no later than 30 September 2023).

The same rules and conditions will also be valid for owners of Euro 5 diesel taxis, holders of municipal operating licenses and for Euro 4 diesel buses used for the local public transport service.

Owners of a Euro 5 diesel with an annual or monthly subscription to one of the interchange car parks in Lampugnano, Forlanini and Rogoredo will be able to access Area B until 30 September 2023.

As regards the car park in via Ripamonti, the Administration is studying a subscription system that allows users to take advantage of the same type of exemption.

The ban on access and circulation in Area B is postponed to 30 September next year also for Euro 5 diesel vehicles when used for car-pooling. To obtain this exemption it is necessary to be regularly registered on an electronic platform, including those managed by entities authorized to operate on an experimental basis. It's possible register for car-pooling.

Finally, an increase of twenty days of entry into Area B has been foreseen, in addition to the 50 already foreseen, for owners of Euro 5 diesel vehicles with an ISEE of less than 20 thousand euros.

The Administration is working on the implementation of the measures so that by December it will be possible to submit new requests for exemptions on the website of the Municipality of Milan.

"These are measures that we have been working on for some time - explained Arianna Censi, councilor for Mobility -, which we have also shared with the metropolitan city and with the mayors of the province, and in line with the policies we have launched to protect the health of citizens and of Milanese citizens. Our objective remains to reduce the number of polluting cars entering Milan and reward those who use public transport or travel in agreement with other passengers through car-pooling.
