Moriggia Palace

"Take a Break in History" is an initiative organized by our institute to tell our story through a series of free guided tours conducted by museum staff or experts, lasting half an hour during the lunch break.

A construction site of ideas: documents and memorabilia of Carlo Cattaneo
edited by Mariachiara Fugazza, member of the Italian-Swiss Committee for the publication of the Works of Carlo Cattaneo

The purpose of the appointment is to illustrate what is preserved in the Historical Collections su Carlo Cattaneo (1801-1869). A scholar with vast interests, before 1848 he was involved in the journalistic and editorial world, in particular as director of the magazine Il Polytechnic and curator of Natural and civil news on Lombardy. THE Five days marked a turning point for him. In the group that was at the head of the movement, due to the return of the Austrians he retreated to the Canton of Ticino, where he remained, continuing to intervene in Italian affairs.

His Archive - Italian only, which with some memorabilia reached the Municipality's collections thanks to the circle of friends, contains a rich collection documentation: not only correspondence, but study materials and work notes on various topics, from historical-linguistic themes to railway issues, from economics to political debate, in which he participated as a supporter of republican and federalist ideals. The whole offers a Overview not just his personality, but of important aspects of life and society of his time.
