The 'Nidi Sicuri' project has also been extended to nursery schools. Galimberti: “Careful response from educators”

Milan, January 16 2020 – Allow educators to acquire useful skills to deal with emergencies, but also promote correct lifestyles from early childhood.

These are the objectives of the initiatives implemented by the Municipality of Milan in the field of childcare services and which were presented today in a press conference in Palazzo Marino.

The "University goes to kindergarten" project began in the current school year, created in collaboration with the University of Milan, with the support of R4H - Rotary and the Milan Community Foundation. The result of a research application contract signed with the municipal administration, the project involves approximately 80 students from the three-year degree courses in dental hygiene and dietetics going, followed by 20 tutors, to the 172 municipal private nursery schools to propose over 6.700 five-year-old children played a role-playing game aimed at promoting correct lifestyles regarding nutrition, movement and oral hygiene.

The initiative, through which information material is then distributed to the family, allows not only to promote, from early childhood, the culture of health and prevention but also to ensure that children become "little ambassadors" in their families .

The preparation and readiness of adults can instead help in emergency situations. This school year, the project relating to courses for clearing airways and cardiopulmonary resuscitation, which began as an experiment last year for all the educators of the 138 Milanese nursery schools (municipal and contracted) is extended to nursery schools. .

The initiative, which started in January 2018 with the name "safe nests", will involve a total of 3 thousand educators within the year. The readiness of teachers is always fundamental, as in the case of a few days ago when an educator practiced the Heimlich maneuver on a child who she risked suffocating. The initiative is made possible thanks to the collaboration of the Buzzi Foundation, the Buzzi hospital and the Rotary (RC Duomo).

The Municipality of Milan also adheres to the procedure for administering life-saving drugs at school: today there are 275 boys and girls with particular pathologies for which families have requested the administration of life-saving drugs in childcare services and who can count on help of their educators, who act on a voluntary basis in case of emergency.

In February the Administration will also make available to its educators a training/information meeting on epilepsy in children aged 0 to 6 years, thanks to the availability of the Regional Epilepsy Center of the ASST Santi Paolo e Carlo.

“School - declares Education Councilor Laura Galimberti - must be an increasingly safe place for boys and girls. We thank the many partners who made the projects possible, which have now become good practices in schools. The serenity of families and the well-being of the little ones are our objectives and the daily commitment of the educators to whom our greatest thanks go."
