Awareness campaigns

#GenderEquality - Let's show our face

The battle against gender violence is not something that only concerns women.

We need a cultural change and for it to finally happen we need everyone's help and involvement.

And this is why since 2017, on the occasion of 8 March - International Women's Day - the Municipality of Milan has been carrying out communication campaigns with the aim of raising awareness among citizens of the need for a common battle against gender violence.

The #DonnediMilano campaign, visible in many city spaces and on the Facebook page of the Municipality of Milan, aims to tell the stories, work and objectives of Milanese women.

"It's a way to build the narrative of the city – explains the Mayor's Delegate for Gender Equal Opportunities, Elena Lattuada – through the voice of women who work, who are committed, who make Milan great every day. A city of women not only on March 8, but all year round."

On the facade of Palazzo Marino and on civic buildings the flag at half-mast is a sign of mourning and solidarity with the families of the victims, but also the symbol of the city's commitment to safety and the right to respect and freedom of all women.

The idea started in Milan but soon involved the other large cities of the country, from Turin to Padua, from Genoa to Palermo.
And the "Pact of Municipalities for gender equality and against violence”, born on 8 March 2018 on the initiative of the Mayor of Milan Beppe Sala and the president of Anci (National Association of Italian Municipalities) Antonio Decaro. The document is the result of a long journey, which saw the involvement of Mayors and Mayors united by the desire to sign a strong commitment in favor of equality and against violence.

The "Pact of Municipalities for gender equality and against violence" provides 11 actions ranging from support to women in work-life conciliation to support for anti-violence networks, from the involvement of men, also through communication campaigns, to raising awareness among younger people against the spread of stereotypes.

An important point envisaged by the Pact is restitution: the adhering administrations undertake to annually provide citizens with the results of their commitment in these areas, so that the Pact does not remain just a trace on paper but is translated into concrete actions.

In addition to Milan, the metropolitan cities of Turin, Bari, Bologna, Cagliari, Catania, Florence, Genoa, Messina, Naples, Palermo, Reggio Calabria, Rome and also Padua and Varese immediately joined the pact.

The BeSt (Beyond Stereotype) project constitutes the first intervention model built to act in schools at a systemic level against gender stereotypes.

The objective is to educate children to respect differences to prevent violence and bullying. Taken off thanks to funding from the Cariplo Foundation and translated into a protocol with the contribution of sector specialists, it was tested during 2019 at the Riccardo Massa institute, in the Gallaratese district and was appreciated by teachers and parents.
