Mayor's Delegate for Gender Equal Opportunities

From 2 December 2021 and until the end of the mandate of the Mayor of Milan Giuseppe Sala, the Mayor's Delegate for Gender Equal Opportunities is Elena Lattuada.

The assignment - free of charge - includes "work to strengthen initiatives for gender equality and, in particular, has as its main objective the establishment of a Milan Women's Center in every municipality of the city; this new local service will have to be a strong point of reference, within which citizens will be able to find information, support and initiatives dedicated to equal gender opportunities".

Specifically:

  • development of proposals and projects on the subject of gender equality
  • intensification of contacts and collaboration with entities operating in Milan
  • continuation of the relationship with universities and research institutes for the collection and processing of all useful data.

The Delegate's attention will focus on the coordination of the Milan Women's Centers in the Municipalities but also on the control of the municipal administration and the investee companies on measures useful for guaranteeing gender equality in the workplace.
Furthermore, in particular, on sharing between genders in the working sphere and on the creation of thematic cultural events that can become stable events for citizens and to give prominence to Milan also on an international level.

It is starting from the assumption that male and female citizens have different needs and that everyone can benefit from a more equal society, that the need arose for an institutional figure within the Municipality of Milan that places gender equality at the center of its activity and the specific needs of women: the Delegate for Gender Equal Opportunities.

With this spirit in 2011, the then Mayor of Milan Giuliano Pisapia appointed Francesca Zajczyk – professor of Urban Sociology at Bicocca University – as the first Delegate for Gender Equal Opportunities of the Municipality of Milan.
His role was aimed at developing policies for equal opportunities through the promotion of campaigns against gender stereotypes and against advertising campaigns detrimental to the dignity of women; in 2015 you then promoted the candidacy of Milan, after Beijing and New York, as the seat of the UN World Conference on Women.
His contribution was important for the preparation of models and procedures for the application of equal democracy in the investee companies of the Municipality of Milan and in the career paths of the municipal administration.
Finally, she worked on the establishment of a table against violence against women and on the creation of a database of "female" professional curricula.

In 2016, during his first mandate, Mayor Giuseppe Sala appointed Daria Colombo – journalist and writer - as Delegate for Gender Equal Opportunities to provide support to the Mayor's policy activities, with particular reference to the creation and promotion of initiatives for the development of gender equal opportunities, which mainly took the form of establishment of a Milan Women's Center in each Municipality and in preparing actions aimed at creating the Gender Budget.
Emphasis was also placed on the creation of cultural initiatives and events dedicated to gender equality issues; for example, we would like to point out the Milano Donna award dedicated to the associations that work for gender equality in the city and awarded for the first time on 22 December 2020.

In 2021, at the beginning of the second mandate of the Mayor of Milan, the baton was passed to Elena Lattuada.

The role of Gender Equal Opportunities Delegate is always free of charge.
