Plane tree VTA 35574

This is perhaps one of the largest trees in Milan: despite a not particularly significant height, the trunk has a diameter of 260 centimetres.

The area where the plant stands has been fenced off to avoid excessive compaction and because the foliage, severely damaged by lightning, tends to lose large branches. Most of the branches were consolidated to the trunk with special anchor cables and those damaged by lightning were used by a family of woodpeckers to build their nests.

This plant also highlights the presence of lignin-degrading fungi and is subjected to periodic checks. A few years ago the tree was damaged by an unknown person who tried to saw off its trunk.

The VTA 35574 plane tree of the Montanelli Gardens was chosen by the Bicocca University for the study of the microfauna that frequents its foliage.
