Celtis australis is a characteristic tree of the Mediterranean basin. In our country it is known as bagolaro and "Spaccasassi", a name that evokes the ability of its roots to grow even on the steepest rocky walls.

It has a very elastic wood and is particularly resistant to air pollution. It also produces fruits rich in sugar which represent an important source of sustenance for the bird species that live in the city.

The specimen housed in Villa Belgiojoso is part of a group made up of two specimens. It has a canopy 30 meters high, the extension of which is affected by the competition of the adjacent specimen. Its trunk is almost 150 centimeters in diameter.

This tree is also subjected to periodic checks, due to the presence of a pathogenic fungus that has developed in the collar area and which could undermine its stability.
