The “Spaccasassi” or monumental hackberry of the Montanelli Gardens has almost identical dimensions to the specimen housed in the Gardens of Villa Belgiojoso, but has a more extensive canopy, due to the absence of other trees in the vicinity.

Among the numerous uses of the plant and its fruits is the use of the seeds in the making of rosary crowns. Another peculiarity of the Celtis is the presence of endemic species in restricted territories. For example, the Celtis aetnensis which grows only on the slopes of Etna and in a few other Sicilian locations.

Even the collar of this tree, like that of many other plants, is infested with lignin-degrading fungi and is constantly monitored to verify its stability.
