St. Paul

Twinned with Milan since 28 July 1961
Mayor: Ricardo Nunes
Population: 12.600.000 inhabitants

San Paolo - founded in 1554 - is the capital of the federal state of the same name and stands on a 750 meter plateau.

Starting from the last decades of the 19th century it had an impetuous and rapid development, attracting an ever-increasing flow of immigrants, especially Italians.

This development, which continues today at one of the highest rates in the world, has made São Paulo not only a very modern urban city and the country's first industrial center, but also a commercial and financial hub of primary importance.

With numerous cultural and scientific institutions - including the Art Museum and the University - São Paulo is today the largest metropolis in South America.

The pact, signed on 28 July 1961 by the two cities to establish collaborative relationships in the economic and cultural sectors, was the first twinning of the Municipality of Milan with other cities in the world.

Milan and Sao Paulo play a prominent role in the economic, productive and financial life of their respective nations.

We must not forget, then, the contribution given to the largest city in Latin America by the work and ingenuity of the Italians, who moved here in huge numbers from 1820 to the beginning of the Second World War.

Even today the Italian community is the largest and most widespread and is considered the greatest concentration of Italians outside Italy.
It is estimated that around 6 million citizens have at least one Italian ancestry in their family.

The city of Sao Paulo collaborates with the city of Milan within the C40 - Cities Climate Leadership Group, Mayors Migration Council and MUFPP – Milan Urban Food Policy Pact networks.
