Lyon

Twinned with Milan since 22 September 1967
Mayor: Grégory Doucet
Population: 516.000 inhabitants

Capital of the Rhone department, Lyon is located at the confluence of the Rhone and Saone rivers, 390 km from Paris.

The city - whose artistic heritage boasts numerous civil and religious buildings of great interest placed under the patronage of UNESCO in the two oldest districts - is divided into three sections: the ancienne ville, founded by the Romans (Claudia Augusta Lugdunum) and then developed in the Middle Ages on the right of the Saone river; the central villa, built between the 1808th and XNUMXth centuries on the confluence peninsula formed by the two rivers; the nouvelle ville, on the left of the Rhone, made up of the university (university founded in XNUMX), industrial and more modern residential areas.

The three sectors are connected to each other by 26 bridges, 12 of which over the Rhone and 14 over the Saone.

On 22 September 1967 the twinning between Lyon and Milan was ratified; the two cities are characterized by singular affinities: both are centers of significant economic importance and custodians of a notable cultural and artistic heritage, and both participate in benchmarking networks for the comparison of excellence between different European cities.

As part of the Twinning relationships, the Municipality of Milan organizes - in collaboration with the 6th Arrondissement of the Metropolitan City of Lyon and the Lyon Bleu International school - language courses for Milanese students and adults in Lyon during the summer months.

Lyon collaborates with Milan within the EUROCITIES and MUFPP – Milan Urban Food Policy Pact networks.
