Daegu

Twinned with Milan since 2 July 2015
Mayor: Hong Joon-pyo
Population: 2.490.000 inhabitants

Located in a valley surrounded by low mountains eighty kilometers from the coast, Daegu is the fourth largest city in South Korea, divided into seven districts and one county.

Belonging in ancient times to the Kingdom of Silla (one of the Three Kingdoms of Korea, under which the unification of the Korean peninsula took place), during the five centuries of the Joseon Dynasty it became the administrative, economic and cultural capital of one of the traditional eight provinces of the country .

Having become independent from Gyeongsangbuk-do Province in the 1995s, Daegu was first a Directly Administered City, with the rank of a Province and in XNUMX a Metropolitan City.

Always an important transport crossroads thanks to its strategic position between the Geumho and Nakdong rivers, since the beginning of the 20th century it has stood out as one of the country's economic engines.

Since the end of the Korean War (1953), the city has experienced explosive growth that has increased its population tenfold and made it the center of manufacturing industry par excellence; much of the production revolves around the textile, metallurgical and machinery sectors.

Daegu and Milan, both metropolitan cities and important economic centers that have been able to combine modernity and tradition, are commercial and cultural partners.

Like Milan, Daegu is a green city that has implemented important projects in the field of environmental sustainability and innovation, achieving excellent results in the field of greenery and urban regeneration.

Both cities are at the forefront of university-level education and share a passion for the creative world, especially design and fashion.

The city of Daegu collaborates with the city of Milan within the MUFPP – Milan Urban Food Policy Pact network.
