Krakow, the capital of the voivodeship of the same name, is located on the Vistula at the crossroads of important traffic routes. It is the ancient capital of the country, the historical seat of the Polish kings as well as an important university and is served by an international airport.
The city has received important recognition from UNESCO.
Thanks to its notable monumental buildings, including the Gothic cathedral and the royal castle (2018th-XNUMXth centuries), it is included in the list of the twelve most important architectural complexes in the world. Furthermore, in XNUMX the Krakow production of nativity scenes was included in the representative list of Intangible Cultural Heritage.
In 2000 the city was awarded the title of European Capital of Culture, in 2014 of European City of Sport and UNESCO City of Literature and in 2019 of European Capital of Gastronomic Culture.
In 2016 Krakow hosted the XXXI World Youth Day presided over by the Holy Father, Francis.
John Paul II, elected Pope in 1978, was the first foreign Pontiff in the entire history of the Vatican to have studied in Krakow.
On the occasion of the 20th anniversary of the twinning between Krakow and Milan, the Cracow Singers concert took place on 15 December 2023 at the Polish Consulate General.
