Birmingham, the second city in the United Kingdom, is located in the county of the West Midlands, central England, 150 km. North West London.

It arose as a road center in the 11th century and its development began in the 16th century with the exploitation of the iron and coal deposits and with the first iron and steel factories.

Today Birmingham is a multicultural center full of life, art and culture. It is home to renowned universities and the country's oldest public school, King Edward's School, founded in 1552. The economic scene is dominated by the tertiary and financial sectors.

The Municipality of Milan signed the Twinning Pact with Birmingham in October 1973, ratified on 5 June 1974, aimed both at starting a youth exchange program and at promoting projects and initiatives in the cultural, scientific and artistic fields.

Birmingham collaborates with the city of Milan within the EUROCITIES and MUFPP – Milan Urban Food Policy Pact networks.
