Insects and pests

In the disinfestation of animals, harmful insects and vectors of pathogenic elements, the municipal administration only intervenes on:

  • its own directly managed properties
  • their appurtenances: spaces, gardens, courtyards, cellars and attics attached to or in front of municipal buildings, school facilities, etc.
  • the municipal banks of uncovered canals and the areas of municipal property delimited by fences.

In all other cases, including private buildings, the interventions are carried out following a report from the Health Protection Agency.

These are insects with different characteristics. The objectives of the intervention are also different.

The Municipality intervenes only in the event of the onset of cockroaches/cockroaches in municipally owned road drains.

The Municipality activates rodent control interventions when the presence of mice is found within public green areas such as parks, flowerbeds or public gardens.

The Municipality of Milan intervenes annually to combat and disinfest the areas against mosquitoes. The disinfestation treatments are carried out on municipal greenery (parks, gardens, etc.), greenery belonging to schools and directly managed municipal properties, in manholes and road drains, with cycles of adulticidal and larvicidal intervention of a repressive and preventive nature, carried out temporally in also a function of the climatic trend.

In the logic of the lowest possible environmental impact, the integrated disinfestation control (biological-chemical) has remained constant over the years and takes the form of:

  • in the rice-growing areas, through the anti-larval treatment service through the spreading of organic products (Bacillus Thurigiensis Variante Israelensis) on the rice fields by means of ultralight helicopters within the municipal perimeter, in the agricultural territorial bands of the South, South-East and North-West of the city
  • through studies and analyzes on and in the territory in the control of infestations, the execution of monitoring of culicids by means of CO2 traps, fatty acids and ovitraps for the purpose of detection and subsequent specific disinfestation of outbreaks of Aedes Albopictus (Tiger Mosquito ),  and in general of the other more harmful and annoying mosquito species
  • the annual issue, in agreement with A.T.S. Milan Metropolitan City, of a specific union ordinance against the Tiger mosquito and other mosquito species for private areas and residences.

To encourage larvicidal disinfestation in the drains of privately owned properties, following an agreement between the Municipality of Milan and the Municipal Pharmacies group, it is possible for all citizens to directly purchase packs of an organic insecticide, Bacillus thurigiensis var. Israelensis, sold in tablets at a controlled price and which must be used weekly throughout the spring-autumn period.

In the Attachments The 2022 union ordinance for the prevention and control of diseases transmitted by insect vectors and in particular by the tiger mosquito is available.
