Milan, March 10 2022 – The unveiling ceremony of the plaque in memory of Giuseppe Tavecchio, who died 50 years ago right in Via Verdi on the corner with Piazza della Scala, took place today in the presence of the Councilor for Culture Tommaso Sacchi. Killed innocently on 11 March 1972 by a tear gas canister during a walk on a Saturday afternoon marred by street clashes, so says the inscription revealed by the councilor in the presence of his son Elvezio and granddaughter Monica. Also present were the writer Andrea Kerbaker and the students of Beccaria.

Giuseppe Tavecchio, a 60-year-old pensioner, former guardian of the municipal slaughterhouse, finds himself involuntarily involved in a demonstration and is accidentally killed in via Giuseppe Verdi, at the intersection with via Manzoni a few steps from Piazza della Scala, due to a tear gas canister. employed by the police during the ongoing clashes with the demonstrators.

The plaque, commissioned by the Municipality of Milan as part of the Milan is memory initiatives, is located at number 2 of Via Verdi, near which Giuseppe Tavecchio was passing when he was accidentally hit by tear gas. The story of Giuseppe Tavecchio's death was little broadcast in the city's history and resurfaced thanks to the research work of the writer Andrea Kerbaker and his book significantly entitled "The Removal". Research work also carried out by students of the Beccaria high school, within a project on the so-called "years of lead".

The choice of the date, on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of his death, underlines the constant commitment of the municipal administration to preserving and transmitting the meaning and value of memory.
