Advice against bicycle thieves

Here are some tips to reduce theft:

  • always lock your bike with a padlock!
  • park the bike in a clearly visible place and together with other bicycles
  • if possible, don't park your bike in the same place every day
  • try to make the lock adhere as much as possible to the bike and to the bicycle rack support. This reduces the space that can be used to pry the lock and break it
  • make sure the padlock does not touch the ground (otherwise it would be easier to break it)
  • if possible, lock both wheels and the bike frame, or just the front wheel and frame, especially if the wheels release with a lever
  • take easily removable parts with you (for example lights, pump, etc.)
  • keep photographs and affix identifying marks to the bicycle to facilitate recognition in the event of theft.

If the theft has already occurred
1. file a report with the police, possibly accompanying the description of the stolen vehicle with a photograph
2. contact the Stolen Bike Counter Team of the local police for information on stolen and recovered bicycles in the city or metropolitan area.
