Councilor Grandi: "Useful initiative to help Milan be greener, more resilient and sustainable"

Milan, October 1 2022 – On the occasion of Milan Green Week, presented this afternoon at Cascina Cuccagna, “Climate Campaigners”, the app to encourage citizens to implement sustainable, environmentally friendly behaviors useful for limiting CO₂ emissions.

Users will be involved in four areas: from energy saving to mobility, through the fight against food waste and the adoption of less impactful consumption choices. “Climate Campaigners” was born as part of the European project of the same name financed by the "Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme", which in addition to Milan involves numerous entities led by the Energieinstitut of the Johannes Kepler University of Linz, in collaboration with the University National of Ireland (Galway), the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (Oslo) and the cities of Cape Town (ZAF), Dublin, Freistadt, Grenoble, Izmir, Lahti, La Libertad (PER), Linz, Pesaro, Skopelos and Trois-Rivières (CAN).

"The climate and environmental crisis - declares the Councilor for the Environment and Green, Elena Grandi - concerns all of us. And if politics has a great responsibility and the duty to face it, it is necessary that each of us also begins to change our habits and the way we consume. Only by collectively changing behaviors, making them more sustainable and fair, will we be able to reverse course and implement actions capable of protecting the planet and guaranteeing a better future for the new generations. Thanks to this app, each of us will be able to do something for the environment in an easy and fun way, helping Milan to be greener, more resilient and sustainable."

Through the app, each user will be able to choose what to improve in and test themselves by accepting the many challenges proposed. For example, by choosing the "dry cleaning" challenge, you will receive advice on how to wash clothes in a sustainable way, reducing waste of water, electricity and eliminating chemical detergents. By choosing the "enter the recycling circuit" challenge instead, suggestions will be offered on how to carry out correct separate waste collection or compact cans or plastic bottles before placing them in the appropriate containers. By overcoming the challenges, you will be able to earn City Coins (discounts and benefits at the commercial activities that join the initiative) as well as making your own contribution to reducing emissions.

The numerous suggestions offered by the app are the result of the collective work of an international and multidisciplinary team of scientists and experts in the sector. A database of solutions aimed at helping you find simple, effective and fun ways to reduce your carbon footprint. The challenges and suggestions are designed and adapted to adhere to the history, development and characteristics of each individual city and its population. To date, 13 cities in the world have already made the App available for their citizens: Milan, Pesaro, Dublin, Lahti, Izmir, Linz, Grenoble, Malmö, Freistadt, Vilnius, Skopelos, Trois-Rivières, La Libertad, Città del Capo and Dafini many others will be added during the year.
The “Climate Campaigners” app can be downloaded for free from the Apple Store and Google Play.
