The Metropolitan City of Milan was established on 1 January 2015.

The governing bodies are:

• the Metropolitan Mayor who is by right, in this first phase, the Mayor of the Municipality of Milan;
   
• the Metropolitan Council composed of 24 members elected by the 2056 mayors and city councilors of the 134 municipalities that make up the Metropolitan City of Milan;
   
• the Metropolitan Conference made up of the 133 mayors of the Metropolitan City of Milan.

The elections of the metropolitan council took place on 28 September 2014 at the headquarters of the Province of Milan in via Vivaio 1.
