Garden of the Righteous

On 24 January 2003, a space dedicated to the Righteous from all over the world was inaugurated in Milan, in the large green area of Monte Stella.

The term Righteous is taken from the Bible passage that states "he who saves one life saves the whole world" and was first applied in Israel to refer to those who saved Jews during Nazi persecution in Europe.

The concept of Righteous was taken up to remember the attempts to stop the extermination of the Armenian people in Turkey in 1915 and by extension to all those in the world who have tried or are trying to prevent the crime of genocide, to defend human rights in extreme situations, or who fight to safeguard memory against recurrent attempts to deny the reality of persecution.

The Association for the Garden of the Righteous, made up of Gariwo, the Municipality of Milan and the Union of Italian Jewish Communities, has the aim of identifying important figures to whom to dedicate recognition and the related planting of a tree in the Garden of the Righteous.

The tree can be dedicated to living people or to the memory of those who have distinguished themselves by their desire to oppose extreme evil in any part of the world, or who have tried to defend truth and memory against any denialist attempt.
