Monte Stella project

The Monte Stella project is aimed at the care and maintenance of the environmental complex of Monte Stella, through collaborative activities in which associations, committees, groups of citizens and the various interested parties take part.
Co-financed by the Fondazione di Comunità di Milano Onlus, the project is part of a larger long-term intervention.

2020 marks the 60th anniversary of the creation of Monte Stella, a remarkable example of "extensive urban greenery" and a forerunner of those criteria for creating public greenery later defined as "urban forestation".

The quality of the places; the value it has not only for the QT8 neighborhood of which it is part, but for the entire city; the significant extension of the green area; the important results achieved: all this makes Monte Stella one of the identifying elements of the city. Furthermore, in a particularly dense urban fabric - such as that of Milan - the large green space of Monte Stella has a significant environmental impact: it performs an important function of environmental mitigation and improvement of air quality; it represents an area in which citizens can cultivate their well-being; allows you to observe an interesting plant and animal biodiversity.

The objectives of the project are multiple and transversal.

Firstly, there is the restoration and safety of current micro disruptions, the improvement of the biological quality of the Monte Stella Park and the strengthening of the plants and shrubs present.

Furthermore, the project represents an important "pilot case" for the preparation of guidelines on hydraulic invariance and the use of naturalistic engineering techniques. The operational methods of the project are applicable in similar urban contexts both at a national and European level.

From a participatory point of view, the project promotes a collaborative spirit among citizens for the care, protection and shared and respectful use of both green and anthropic spaces.

The implementation of the project is favored by the use of a series of strategies, such as:

  • survey and verification of the complex rainwater disposal system, through the use of techniques relating to hydraulic invariance, and drafting of the relevant guidelines;
  • recovery, restoration and arrangement of the steepest areas;
  • identification and perimeter of an urban oasis;
  • creation of free environmental educational courses, aimed at schools in Municipality 8;
  • implementation of periodic animation and dissemination initiatives aimed at citizens, relating to the environmental issues of Monte Stella;
  • launch of a pilot naturalistic engineering construction site;
  • completion of the "CAI Milano 01" path from Monte Stella, up to Piazza Duomo, aimed at retracing the origins of the park and the relationship over time between the latter and the city of Milan;
  • design of new routes, or improvements to existing routes, to facilitate their use by subjects with different visual and motor abilities;
  • creation of a plantation house;
  • organization of "ecological days", dedicated to cleaning the park.

  • Increase in areas made safe and redeveloped;
  • reduction in acts of vandalism, accumulation of waste, improper use of paths;
  • reduction of noise pollution;
  • recognition of the project as a qualifying "pilot case";
  • creation of a recognized urban oasis;
  • activation of new tools for the participatory protection of urban biodiversity;
  • implementation of community participation in the care and protection of Monte Stella, as an essential element of the landscape and urban biodiversity.
