New Trees 2020 - 2021

Trees, exceeded 500 thousand specimens. Almost 28 thousand plants arriving with the ForestaMi plan

Milan is increasingly green. Since November 2020, the planting of 27.721 plants has been underway, including 20.120 trees and 7.621 shrubs in all neighborhoods of the city.
By March these plants will enrich the heritage of 501.252 trees present in the area, of which 246.483 are managed directly by the Municipality of Milan. The latter are mapped punctually on the Geoportal of the Municipality of Milan.

In 2017, 9.200 trees were planted annually in the city. The strong increase in interventions in just a few years demonstrates the growing attention towards the environment and greenery by the Administration and citizens.

Precisely for this reason the Municipality of Milan, together with the Metropolitan City and the Polytechnic of Milan, is implementing the ForestaMi urban forestation project, which intends to bring 3 million new trees to the metropolitan area by 2030. Already this year it is expected to reach 114 thousand specimens across the entire territory.

To this end, the Fund was established ForestMi at the Milan Community Foundation, of which the Municipality of Milan is part. The Fund is responsible for collecting contributions from companies and citizens who want to participate and thus accelerate the great urban forestation plan.

As regards the over 20 thousand new trees in Milan, over 11 thousand are being planted directly by the Municipal Administration, while the remainder are linked to urban planning interventions, the result of sponsorships by private operators or initiatives of the bodies that they manage the parks (for example Parco Nord, Italia Nostra and Bosco in the city).

Every week you can follow the planting activities of the 11 thousand trees of the Municipality of Milan on this page.
