Scheduled maintenance of public green areas

The scheduled maintenance of public green areas, including maintenance of the furnishings placed in the areas, is the responsibility of the Global Service contract.

The contract has been ongoing since 1 July 2021 and was awarded via tender to AVR spa in a temporary grouping of companies with: Euroambiente Srl – HW-Style Srl – Rappo Srl.

The following are excluded from the competences of the service contractor:

  • cleaning activities of the areas (including leaf collection)
  • draining the wells
  • the management activities of opening and closing the gates of those locations subject to night closure.

Management of the procurement contract
The management of the contract, in a single lot, is centralized in the Green Area.
The control of the contract in the territory is carried out by technicians who report to the Municipalities. The controls then converge in the single centralized system which is managed by the same Area and is accessible and shared with the service contractors (RTI AVR and Amsa).

The structure of the Green Area Maintenance Unit is composed of:

  • 1 Sole Procedure Manager (RUP)
  • 1 Director of Contract Execution (DEC) and a "deputy" who also follows the IT part of the system in use
  • An office that follows extraordinary maintenance and related accounting composed of 1 official and 3 technicians
  • An office that deals with issues relating to irrigation systems composed of a technician
  • 9 Municipality technicians, who relate to the subjects mentioned above
  • 23 controllers (2 - 3 employees for each Municipality), coordinated by the area technicians, who carry out daily checks of the greenery with inspections of the territory.

Furthermore, the Green Area Maintenance Unit has an office made up of three people who are experts in "tree planting" who are dedicated to checking the state of the trees and related interventions. They supervise the scheduled checks on the stability of trees and those relating to felling due to danger or needs linked to the carrying out of infrastructure works such as in the case of the construction of underground lines and new buildings.

Ordinary maintenance of the city's public green areas concerns:

  • Plant elements (lawns, trees, hedges, etc.)
  • Furnishing elements (games, benches, sports equipment, etc.)
  • Informative system

Extraordinary maintenance on green areas concerns: parks, degraded areas, playgrounds, dog areas, play areas, redevelopment of gardens, new trees, etc.

The agronomic activities consist of:

  • Weeding
  • Maintenance and renovation of lawns
  • Creation and maintenance of flower beds
  • Pruning, removal and planting of hedges and bushes
  • Interventions on trees (pruning, suckering, stability checks: VTA, felling, planting, emergency irrigation, pesticide treatments)

The interventions relating to irrigation systems are:

  •  Activation, operation, control and repair

Activities on inert elements consist of:

  • Restoration of floors
  • Rearrangement of creases
  • Review of fences (fences, wire mesh, orsogrill, etc.)
  • Overhaul and repair of benches
  • Review and repair of warning signs (only regarding those present in green areas)
  • Game review and repair
  • Raising and replacing manhole covers

  • Public green areas of the city: 25.248.627 m²
  • Municipal green areas under direct management - Global Service: 19.050.006 m²
  • Green areas managed by bodies, associations and others: 6.198.621 m²
  • Public green areas per inhabitant (resident population as of 31/12/2020 – 1.392.502*): 18,13 m²
  • Play areas: 988 (684 in green spaces, 304 in school gardens)
  • Dog areas: 407 (total area: 670.688 m²)
  • Single trees: 251.878 (road trees: 69.075 for a total of 376 km)
