The Municipality of Milan guarantees the provision of the school catering service in municipal and state nursery schools and nursery schools, state primary and lower secondary schools through the company Milano Ristorazione SpA.

To guarantee efficient childcare services that meet the needs of families in multi-ethnic Milan, the Municipality of Milan actively collaborates with parents, teachers and educators with a view to improving the quality of services, also through nutritional education initiatives. 

For these reasons, they have been active in educational structures and city schools for many years Canteen commissions, a linking tool between the Municipality, the service manager (Milano Ristorazione), the scholastic and educational institutions and the citizens/users.

The Municipality of Milan has also adopted a specific Municipal Regulation which regulates both the Canteen Commissions and the Citizen Representation of the Canteen Commissions, which has the functions of coordination, connection and representation of the Commissions themselves, as well as synthesis of the requests that emerge from the territory.

A further qualifying element is the institution of Municipal contacts, with liaison functions between the territory, the Municipality, the Canteen Commissions operating in the Municipalities and Citizen Representation.
These subjects, appointed by the respective Councils, facilitate communication between the actors involved locally and the users, also in order to guarantee the transparency of the school catering service, promote and encourage collaboration between public and private subjects to propose programs and activities on the subject of food and health education, develop proposals aimed at improving the service, with the involvement of the Education Commissions of the Municipal Councils.
