San Leonardo - Implementation plan

The area subject to intervention is located within one of the large "satellite districts" of Milan, the Gallaratese district, characterized by the settlement model of the "open city" imagined by Piero Bottoni.

The area subject to the intervention, which extends between Via Fichera, Cilea, Borsa, Falck and the Piazzetta Don Abramo Martignoni, is partially occupied by the buildings owned by the La Madonnina Foundation, used for the provision of services intended for vulnerable subjects . The Foundation, which has been present in the neighborhood since the 1950s, has already started a plan to relocate its activities; planning to maintain only some types of services in the area, which will be relocated to one of the new buildings.

The project presented involves the maintenance of the Church of the Madonnina, built in the 1950s, as an element of memory strongly rooted in the territory. This will be a hinge element between the public spaces located at the entrance to the new park and Piazza Don Abramo Martignoni.

The volumetric articulation of the new residential sectors envisages the arrangement of the taller buildings, the fourteen-storey towers, along the perimeter of the intervention area, abutting the park in line with five or six-storey buildings which at the same time constitute the " facing the park” and harmoniously modulate the proportions of the system of courtyards open to public use. The morphological structure of the settlement was created with the aim of preserving as much as possible the existing arboreal heritage, which contributed to defining the orientations of the new urban fabric.

The project includes a system of residential buildings located mainly on the east and west sides of the lot, in functional continuity with the context.

At the center of the lot is the urban park, the cornerstone of the entire settlement, both for the neighborhood and for the city. The park represents the fulcrum of connections, to which is added the open courtyard building system.

On the northern side of the lot is the student residence which will be built in close connection with the new urban park.

The main part of the commercial activity is located on the eastern side, in direct connection with Via Borsa. The same side is also characterized by the construction of new residential buildings, both in line and in towers, which develop courtyards in succession and integrate the pre-existing ones, as witnesses of the values and history of the place: the Church of the Madonnina and the house hotel for student workers, whose function will be maintained in a new building.
On the southern side there is a free residential building, with possible use as a "monastery".

The western side of the lot is characterized by the presence of Social Residential buildings, in continuity with the pre-existing context, with the possibility of establishing activities serving the residents at the foot of the buildings.

The project involves the settlement of approximately 1.500 inhabitants.
