Green school - Lombardy network for sustainable development

The "Green school" project has the objective of contributing to promoting knowledge on environmental issues and encouraging attitudes, actions and forms of active participation of pupils, the population and institutions of Lombardy, aimed at protecting the environment, fighting against changes climate change and the mitigation of human impact.

The Municipality of Milan collaborates in the implementation of the project by facilitating the promotion of initiatives in its territory and activating a 'green' experimentation within its offices. 

The direct beneficiaries of the action are 40.000 pupils from 250 schools in Lombardy and their families, 100 local authorities, 50 companies, 200 parents' associations and 100 civil society organisations.

The indirect beneficiaries are all those in contact with the direct beneficiaries.

The project is financed by AICS (Italian Agency for Development Cooperation) and has a total budget of 428.727 euros.

The project started in May 2019 and will end in March 2021.

  • The projects aim to reduce the environmental impact per capita and per school in the Lombardy area, with particular attention to the management of urban waste, air quality, energy saving, sustainable mobility, reduction of food waste, water saving .
  • The specific objective is the promotion of climate change mitigation actions in the 12 provinces of Lombardy, involving 40.000 pupils from schools of all levels and their families, 2000 teachers, 100 employees of public bodies. 

  • Teacher training in the 12 provinces: organization of at least 5 training meetings for teachers in each province characterized by a seminar part, with interventions by experts or presentation of good practices, followed by a practical group exercise.
  • Implementation of eco-actions by schools which carry out a preliminary internal survey evaluating their carbon footprint in the selected work area and on the basis of this survey the schools identify intervention priorities.
  • Awarding of the Green School certification.
  • Provincial awareness events on sustainable development.

  1. At least 250 schools in all the Lombardy provinces reduce their carbon footprint and obtain Green School certification;
  2. The population and institutions of Lombardy are sensitized to the issue of environmental protection and active in the fight against climate change;
  3. Networks of active subjects for environmental sustainability (schools, businesses, associations, local authorities) have been built in all the Lombardy provinces.
