Diaspora in Action

Mobilize the Senegalese Diaspora in awareness campaigns against irregular migration.
The "Diaspora in Action" project aims to contribute to raising the awareness of potential migrants residing in Senegal on the risks of irregular migration, involving diaspora communities present in Italy, Spain and Belgium, who can influence the choice to migrate.

The Municipality of Milan will support the creation of an awareness campaign on irregular migration involving key subjects of the Senegalese diaspora in Milan and will collaborate in the creation of a final event in Milan, aimed at sharing the project results and raising citizens' awareness of the real factors of incentive to migration.

The direct beneficiaries of the action are 60 influential people (returning migrants, community and religious leaders and relatives of migrants) in the Senegalese regions of Sédhiou, Kolda, Dakar and Fatick, stakeholders working in the migration sector (Local authorities, national/regional government , NGOs, local associations and international organizations), young potential migrants from Senegal, members of diasporas in Europe and media professionals.

The indirect beneficiaries are Senegalese and European citizens.

The main partners are:

  • ACRA Foundation (leader),
  • The municipality of Turin,
  • The municipality of Milan,
  • Proyecto Regeneracion La Bolina (Granada - Spain),
  • ECLOSIO Association (Liège - Belgium).

The project is financed by the European Union, AMIF Program (Asylum, Migration, Integration Fund) - Directorate General for Home Affairs of the European Commission, and has a total budget of 250.803 euros.

The expected duration is 18 months, from 1 October 2019 to 30 March 2021.

Promote the dissemination of reliable, factual and balanced information on irregular migration and economic and regular alternatives among potential young Senegalese migrants and those who have a role in influencing their decisions by involving diaspora communities in Italy, Belgium and Spain.

  • Meeting in Brussels at the European Union headquarters to define the orientation and procedures of the project.
  • General organization of activities in the different countries (Senegal, Italy, Belgium and Spain) in coordination with partners.
  • Analysis of good/bad practices on awareness campaigns promoted in the past.
  • Focus groups with influential people (returning migrants, community and religious leaders, relatives of migrants, etc.) to identify the salient characteristics of potential migrants.
  • Meetings with local authorities, NGOs and other bodies interested in migration to identify the target population and the key messages of the awareness campaign.
  • Interviews with members of the Senegalese diaspora in Italy, Belgium and Spain to learn about their travel and integration experiences in European countries.
  • Preparation and implementation of the awareness campaign on the risks of irregular migration.
  • Training course in Europe on communication techniques, aimed at members of the Senegalese diaspora.
  • Training course in Senegal on computer and radio journalism, aimed at young Senegalese people.
  • Evaluation of the campaign, preparation and publication of a report on the results obtained.
  • Final event in Milan for the dissemination and capitalization of the results obtained and critical points to take into consideration for future awareness campaigns.
     

 

  • Creation of a multi-stakeholder process to support the design and implementation of an awareness campaign on irregular migration between Senegal and Europe;
  • Improving the quality of information relating to the dangers of irregular immigration disseminated among potential Senegalese migrants and their communities;
  • Strengthening cooperation between key stakeholders for the dissemination of project results and follow-ups
