Our invisible cities - Migrantour

Meetings and new narratives of the world in the city.
The objective of the “Our invisible cities” project is to contribute to the fight against incorrect and discriminatory representations of migration and cultural diversity.
Faced with the predominant negative narrative of the migratory phenomenon based on incorrect, partial, politically oriented information and the result of xenophobia, the project intends to contribute to the diffusion of a new narrative based on the equal dignity of others and on the valorisation of the contribution of the migratory processes of yesterday and today in our society.

The Municipality of Milan, as a partner in the project, supported the holding of meetings on the topic of the project at an intra-municipal level, and the creation of a national networking event between local authorities.

The direct beneficiaries of the action are 100 migrants, of whom at least 70% are women, 6.400 citizens, 75 journalists, 1.000 social workers, 1.500 teachers, 300 representatives/officials of local authorities, 400 representatives of civil society and institutions, 500 young people and 1 million citizens.

The indirect beneficiaries are at least 2 million citizens.

The main partners are:

  • ACRA Foundation (leader),

The project is financed by AICS (Italian Agency for Development Cooperation) among the Global Citizenship Education initiatives; its total budget is 555.244 euros.

The project, carried out from March 2018 to December 2019, continues with the planning and implementation of multi-cultural walks in Milan and in the other cities of the "Migrantour" network.

The project aims to spread innovative models of citizenship, through meeting and awareness-raising paths that act on multiple levels (institutional, social, cultural and communicative) and multiple actors (young people, citizens, local authorities, institutions, media) in order to build a sense of belonging to a larger community and a sense of responsibility towards the Other.

The initiative aims to mobilize key actors such as local administrators, journalists, social workers and teachers, but also the associations of the city neighborhoods in the construction of physical (intercultural itineraries) and virtual (communication campaign and public engagement) routes aimed at narrating and convey the value of cultural diversity.

  • Methodological coordination and study on the impact of intercultural “migran-tour” itineraries on public perception.
  • Updating and relaunching intercultural itineraries.
  • Joint training for methodological updating and tutoring of intercultural companions.
  • Creation of urban intercultural itineraries "migran-tour" for citizens promoted and implemented as opportunities for intercultural meeting.
  • Information and awareness-raising courses for journalists and media operators on data and tools to correctly communicate cultural diversity.
  • Network facilitation and exchange of good practices on inter-cultural dialogue between local administrations.
  • Creation of inter-cultural itineraries dedicated to key players as an information and awareness tool
  • Social media contest for young people for creative and unconventional social communication ideas to combat discrimination.
  • National video and social media campaign to raise awareness and inform young people and citizens about the value of cultural diversity.
  • Territorial awareness and promotion events.

  1. The urban "migran-tour" meeting and intercultural dialogue routes have been improved and strengthened in the cities of Bologna, Cagliari, Catania, Florence, Genoa, Milan, Naples, Pavia, Rome and Turin.
  2. The main actors in the public narrative have access to adequate information and tools for the correct understanding and greater awareness of the complexity of the migration phenomenon.
  3. A correct narrative of the migratory phenomenon and the value of cultural diversity is effectively conveyed to public opinion through the active involvement of young people.
