Marching with the climate

Young people and local authorities against climate change.
The project  "Marching with the climate" aims to promote among young people a culture of individual commitment to human rights and sustainable development, to build a more equitable future, free from war and poverty.

The Municipality of Milan participates in the project by collaborating to increase the skills and involvement of local authorities in citizenship education by supporting the territorial awareness campaign and involving other local authorities in the metropolitan area in the project objectives.

Beneficiaries:

The direct beneficiaries of the action are the upper secondary school students (14-19 years old) of the territories involved in the project, the teachers of the same schools, the local authorities and the national authorities responsible for climate change.

The indirect beneficiaries are all citizens of the municipalities concerned and possibly all Italian citizens.

The project is financed by AICS - Italian Agency for Development Cooperation, among the Global Citizenship Education initiatives; the total budget is €666.666,00.

The project started in May 2019 with completion at the end of March 2021.

Increased education and awareness of young people on individual behaviors that can be useful in combating climate change and promoting their active participation, also through a highly symbolic action (the Climate March).

Creation of stable dynamics of mutual listening and relationships between young people and local authorities and more generally, the stakeholders (associations, local economic realities) of the territorial communities where they reside for the identification and implementation of action and education strategies to be implemented at a local level (Municipalities, Provinces, Regions) that can be useful in combating climate change.

  • Design of resources and educational paths using the non-formal ECG methodology
  • Teacher training on climate change issues with interactive and participatory methodologies typical of ECG, giving particular attention to the empowerment of teachers
  • Educational paths in classes focused on the topic of climate change and structured so that it can be included in the school curriculum
  • Production of datasets, consultation interfaces, data visualizations on a regional or municipal scale on the environment and climate change
  • InfoDays on the topic of climate change, conducted in the schools where the training course was carried out, with the aim of involving the students trained during the educational courses and gathering participation for the extra-school meetings for youth leaders
  • Participatory and experiential extracurricular workshops in which students, representatives of youth associations and political decision-makers will participate. Through citizen journalism, young people and local authorities will be able to investigate the phenomenon of climate change through the data also produced by data journalism activities
  • Peer education actions at school: previously trained youth leaders will organize and carry out peer education moments in their school to encourage other students to carry out activities during the Territorial March
  • Marching with the climate! Territories against climate change: after the activities with students and youth leaders, a March will be organized in each territory involved to celebrate SDG13 and raise awareness in the local community about climate change
  • Dissemination of datasets and consultation interfaces on climate change
  • Italian summer school: two days during which a representation of students, teachers and representatives of the local authorities from the different territories will meet to exchange ideas, opinions and share what was done during the Territorial March
  • Politics is not an alien: local implementation plans of the national Global Citizenship Education Strategy with particular attention to the effective and informed involvement of young people in the decision-making and policy-making processes that concern them
  • Together against climate change: petition on the National Manifesto against Climate Change aimed at all Italian citizens and promoted via an online platform
  • Right to be heard: event of delivery of petition signatures to the Italian Government

  1. Increased students' knowledge of SDG 13 and young people's ability to become active in their own contexts
  2. Increase the skills and involvement of local authorities in global citizenship education and raising awareness in their local area
  3. Spaces for participation and active interlocution of young people with national political decision-makers have been created.
