Dergano Square

What does the "Open Squares" program include?

Piazza Dergano is a small square in the center of the neighborhood of the same name. Here, the sidewalk on the north side has been "widened" to form a new colorful space in the center of the square, pedestrian and flexible, available to residents for events and neighborhood parties. Previously occupied by parked cars, the space has been redesigned to accommodate seating, ping pong tables, new plants and racks for private and shared bicycles (BikeMi). The road system has been rationalized and the road section of the sections of via Conte Verde and via Brivio along the square has been reduced to moderate the speed of cars and guarantee the safe use of the new pedestrian space. The square has thus returned to being lived in, for the benefit of the citizens and the commercial activities that overlook the space.

How Piazza Dergano was set up

The Municipality of Milan used temporary "tactical" interventions for the first time to quickly reconfigure the space. In Piazza Dergano the works concluded with the inauguration on 22 September 2018.

The intervention includes the use of paint and furnishing elements to delimit the area of the new square and to identify the different play, picnic and rest areas within it.
The square includes street furniture such as planters, benches and play equipment such as ping pong tables.

The square was created by placing furniture and equipment in "temporary" positions. This means that further changes can be made if unexpected problems arise.

The City, working with citizens, will subsequently develop a plan for a permanent plaza to be built using durable materials and identifying a definitive layout.

The comparison of the data collected, before and after the experiment, demonstrates a 50 percent increase in the flow of pedestrians along the adjacent Via Tartini.

86 percent of those interviewed expressed a favorable opinion on pedestrianisation, 72 percent said they frequent the square more, while 84 percent would be happy if the experiment became permanent. 35 percent said they spend more than an hour a day in the square, which has become a point of reference for the neighborhood.

However, the main concern (51 percent) concerns maintaining cleanliness and maintenance, while there is a great demand (89 percent) to increase greenery and play areas in the definitive phase.

Some citizens have suggested repositioning the ping pong tables and extending the colored flooring close to the trees.
