What the Camera Registry is and how it works

The Camera Registry offers the possibility of inserting private cameras installed in compliance with current legislation on privacy into the video surveillance network available to the Police.

Private individuals joining the Camera Registry - which takes place on a voluntary basis - strengthens collaboration between civil society and law enforcement and allows the database aimed at carrying out investigations to be expanded.

In addition to the police forces, the subjects involved in the collection, consultation and processing of data are:

  • the owners of the systems (institutions, companies, professionals, private citizens, etc.)
  • the Technical Contacts of the plants surveyed, indicated by the owners.

The Project was born from the “Vulnerable Victims” working group composed of:

  • Prefecture of Milan
  • Public Prosecutor's Office at the Court of Milan
  • City of Milan
  • Milan's police headquarters
  • Carabinieri - Provincial Command of Milan
  • Financial Police - Provincial Command of Milan.

The registered data is collected and shared with the police through the Municipality of Milan.

For each camera included in the project, the Police Forces have the following information available:

  • position
  • period of operation during the day
  • duration and place of conservation of the images taken
  • name under which the camera is registered on the image storage system
  • names and contact details of the people (Owner and/or Technical Contact) to contact to acquire/view the images.

The System does not contain an archive of images acquired by the Police. Images acquired during an investigation will not be uploaded into the system.

The System was created by adopting the highest possible security standards regarding the protection and confidentiality of data, according to current regulations on privacy and data protection.
