Sharing Cities

The project

As part of the call SCC-01-2015 “Smart Cities and Communities solutions integrating energy, transport, ICT sectors through lighthouse projects” - included in the framework of the "Horizon 2020" program (research and innovation framework program - 2014/2020) for the creation of a nearly zero energy smart district - the Municipality of Milan is participating, as a partner, together with the cities of London (project leader) and Lisbon, in the "Sharing Cities" project. The project area is Porta Romana - Vettabbia.

The main areas of the project are three (People/Place/Platform):

  1. People: participation mechanisms aimed at co-designing new services to be placed in neighborhoods and triggering virtuous behaviours.
  2. Place: new technologies for buildings, integrated energy management systems, shared mobility (car sharing + bike sharing), intelligent street lights.
  3. Platform: urban sharing platform for managing data from a wide range of sources, for example from sensors as well as traditional statistics.

The partnership is made up as follows:

  • Municipality of London (project leader), with its partners,
  • Municipality of Lisbon, with its partners,
  • Eurocities ASBL (Belgium),
  • Municipality of Milan, with the following partners: Fondazione Politecnico di Milano, AMAT, ATM, Politecnico di Milano, Poliedra, Cefriel, Teicos UE Srl, Future Energy, Kiunsys Srl, NHP Srl, Legambiente onlus, Ricerca Sistema Energetico (RSE Spa), A2A Spa, A2A Reti Elettriche, Selene and Siemens Spa.

The project started on January 1, 2016 and ended on December 31, 2020 (3 years for the implementation of the interventions and 2 years for monitoring).

  • citizen participation
  • energy efficiency of buildings
  • renewable energy management service
  • shared electric mobility: electric car sharing, electric bike sharing, electric charging stations, intelligent parking stalls, electric goods transport vehicles (electric logistics)
  • smart street lights
  • urban sharing platform

  • creation of a dashboard for sustainable energy management;
  • energy requalification of a public residential building and a series of private residential buildings;
  • creation of intelligent light poles in the demonstration area, capable of guaranteeing constant control of the lighting flow, depending on the presence of vehicles and/or pedestrians in the area of interest, in order to obtain a reduction in energy consumption;
  • creation of the district heating network from renewable energy sources;
  • expansion of car sharing and electric bike sharing and creation of new charging points;
  • creation of business models to promote smart technologies and their application;
  • development and implementation of the communication plan;
  • monitoring and evaluation.

  • active citizen participation activities and planning for the co-creation of sharing services to integrate the urban platform layer;
  • development of a neighborhood-level reward system to incentivize behavior change;
  • energy requalification of 4.633 m2 (20.000 multi-storey public buildings) and XNUMX mXNUMX (mixed ownership buildings);
  • creation of a micro-grid (intelligent information and electricity distribution network) capable of optimizing energy supply and demand in real time;
  • provision of 62 electric vehicles, 150 electric bikes / 7 stations, 76 points of
    charging: 60 for car sharing (20 fast), 10 for bike sharing, 1 for eLogistics vehicles, 5 will be available near the Symbiosis area, 125 parking stalls, 11 shared electric vehicles intended for goods distribution: 9 vans and 2 electric bikes
  • creation of 300 wi-fi streetlights equipped with various types of sensors
  • development of a shared urban platform that uses a common standard to be replicated across different cities.
