REEC - REINFORCE EDUCATORS, EMPOWER CHILDREN

The project

Terre des hommes Hellas (Tdh), International Rescue Committee Hellas (IRC) and the Municipality of Milan will implement the REEC project in Greece and Italy, in close collaboration with the Municipality of Athens.

The project aims to strengthen the system of protection and protection for children, through the acquisition or strengthening of skills by educators, social workers and service managers, in order to carry out actions and promote contexts capable of responding to needs of those girls and boys who experience or are at risk of experiencing adverse experiences.

  • Land of men.

The main objective of the project is, in fact, the promotion of the well-being of girls and boys through the development of educational contexts in which it is possible to understand the needs and difficulties of children, with particular regard to minor victims of trauma and violence.

Locally, the Municipality of Milan works with the International Rescue Committee (IRC), with which a collaboration has already been in place since 2018 thanks to which a training program for educators has been developed, which strengthens their skills and provides the tools necessary to support children who are unwell or who have suffered various types of trauma.

Through the REEC project, the training action which has been tested in a small group from 2018 to today, can be integrated into a coherent theoretical pedagogical context and spread in a more widespread and structured way among the services of the Childhood Area.

In particular, following a period of discussion on tools and methods between the project partners, an adequate curriculum for early childhood will be defined, consistent with the pedagogical guidelines of the Municipality of Milan, on the theme of the protection and development of educational contexts suitable for promoting well-being and early identification of signs of distress.

To this end, the partner Terre des Hommes contributes to the realization of the project with its decades of experience on the topic of protection and with some specific materials implemented in schools and childcare services in Greece.

Following the joint work between the project partners, IRC and the Municipality of Milan have co-designed a training program dedicated to teachers of childcare services, with the aim of promoting well-being classes and the learning of social-emotional skills, such as vulnerable children's ability to listen and interact positively with peers, resolve conflicts, manage stress, process difficult emotions and engage in creative thinking. The project also includes moments of exchange with other professionals involved in the field of protection such as social workers, healthcare workers and psychologists.

The training program includes online and in-person courses in the services, with moments of observation and coaching.
Furthermore, a repository of project materials (webinars, documents and videos) was implemented in order to document and disseminate the training contents.
Finally, international multi-professional exchange visits are planned between the cities of Athens and Milan, in order to allow knowledge of each other's contexts and the exchange of experiences and good practices.
