Food for Cities

The project

Presented by the Municipality of Milan as part of the URBACT call dedicated to good practices for sustainable and integrated urban development, Food for Cities analyzes the fundamental role played by food and the adoption of a sustainable food system as key factors in supporting urban regeneration , economic development and social promotion.
In fact, there are various actions implemented by the Municipality of Milan in the context of food policy: from the redevelopment of the historic Lorenteggio Market, which has become a place of social, cultural and food promotion, to the rehabilitation of Cascina Nosedo, thanks to the OpenAgri project which will become a strategic hub for connection with the peri-urban agricultural area, as well as an open-innovation laboratory for the promotion of innovative initiatives in the agricultural sector.

The urban food policy then led to the implementation of a civic crowdfunding platform, on which various projects relating to the theme of nutrition and other activities of social and cultural relevance developed at city level were presented and financed by the organization of annual "Food Week" to promote street food.
Thanks to the development of the local food policy and the international dialogue activated through the "Milan Urban Food Policy Pact", the Municipality of Milan has created a comprehensive strategy for the approach to issues related to food, in order to create synergies between the various actors of the food system and implement a long-term vision on food choices to combat poverty, promote sustainable diets and support the fight against waste by promoting reuse and recycling.
Food for Cities was awarded as "Good Practice" by the secretariat of the URBACT program in June 2017 and in the coming months the Municipality will collaborate with other European cities to broaden its experiences and create new opportunities for collaboration with other European actors through participation in a dedicated network.
