CENTRINNO

The project

CENTRINNO “New CENTRalities in INdustrial areas as engines for inNOvation and urban transformation” has as its main objective the regeneration of historic urban areas and cultural sites into hubs of entrepreneurship and social and cultural integration.

It was funded by the Horizon 2020 programme, in the 2014 – 2020 research and innovation framework, as part of the call H2020-SC5-20-2019 which has as its object Transforming historic urban areas and/or cultural landscapes into hubs of entrepreneurship and social and cultural integration.

The Municipality of Milan holds the role of coordinator within the consortium made up of 26 partners from 8 European countries (Croatia, Denmark, Estonia, France, Greece, Italy, Holland and Spain) and from 2 non-European countries (Iceland and Switzerland) .

The project started on September 1, 2020 and will end on February 29, 2024 with a total duration of 42 months.

The transformation of historic industrial sites and areas in 9 European cities as innovation hubs will be the subject of experiments that will allow citizens and professionals to pursue common objectives aimed at the regeneration of abandoned urban areas through creativity, innovation, local production, sustainability, behavioral change and culture.

Pilot projects:

The 9 pilot cities were carefully selected based on size, position in the Global Innovation Index and attention to the topic of manufacturing, covering a wide geographical area and different cultural realities.

The pilot partners can be divided into the following sectors:

  • Milan (IT), Amsterdam (NL) and Blönduós (IS) – textiles, leather goods and fashion;
  • Paris (FR), Copenhagen (DK) and Tallinn (EST) – food, food tradition and gardening;
  • Geneva (CH), Barcelona (ES) and Zagreb (HR) – woodworking, furniture and design.

In particular, the Milanese pilot focuses on the themes of circular production in fashion and design. The main objective of the project is to create a "Fab City Hub", a center for the promotion of circular and sustainable digital manufacturing at a neighborhood scale aimed at both citizens and businesses. The pilot's activities take place in the former Ansaldo complex, in the Tortona area, starting from the recovery of the industrial vocation of the area. The pilot is carried out by the Municipality of Milan and by NEMA - Rete Nuova Manifattura in former Ansaldo.
