How can a mezzanine be classified?

With a certain frequency we observe the filing of documents relating to mezzanines. These elements inserted in a building, be it in load-bearing masonry or steel or reinforced concrete, can induce even significant shear actions on the vertical elements, given the proportionality of these with the masses carried.

Depending on the extension and type of construction, the inclusion of a mezzanine inside an existing building may require the safety assessment of the entire building or be limited to the analysis of only the affected parts (local intervention).

In the latter case, as specified in chap. 8.4.1 of the 2018 NTC, it is necessary to verify and demonstrate within the calculation report that no substantial changes are introduced to the behavior of the other parts and of the structure as a whole and that the interventions do not lead to a reduction in pre-existing safety levels ( also in existing structural elements).
