Do decommissioned underground tanks need to be removed? Even if non-polluting or inert? Even in the absence of planning for building works?

The art. 10 paragraph 6 of the Building Regulations of the Municipality of Milan provides in case of need for an environmental investigation that "in the case of the presence of abandoned or to be abandoned underground tanks of any type, the same must be removed prior to the aforementioned investigation, except in cases of proven technical impossibility of removal".

This is waste which, according to environmental regulations, cannot be abandoned on the ground or underground; they are in fact dangerous waste.

This rule is valid both for a single tank connected to a residential heating system and for larger systems with different uses.

Any impossibility of removal must be carefully demonstrated with a technical assessment which, after having analysed, described and documented the actual state of all the structures involved, foresees any movements that the building structures would undergo, carrying out the intervention with the best techniques. available today.

Furthermore, in any case, Environmental Investigations must be carried out around the tank, at adequate depths, in order to verify potential contamination.
