In the case of assessing the safety of a construction for which the foundation loads are reduced after the intervention, is it still necessary to provide the geological relationship?

The NTC2018 in chapter 8.3 have listed in detail when verification of the foundation system is mandatory. It is clarified that this analysis must be carried out if:

  • conditions exist that could give rise to phenomena of global instability;
  • there are significant instabilities in the construction attributable to foundation failures or instabilities of the same nature have occurred in the past;
  • phenomena of overturning and/or sliding of the construction are possible as a result of: unfavorable morphological conditions, modifications made to the profile of the ground near the foundations, seismic actions of the project;
  • liquefaction phenomena of the foundation soil due to the seismic actions of the project are possible.

As clarified in the same point, the choice to omit specific investigations must be clarified in a specific report which illustrates the choices made by the professional and indicates the elements of knowledge used to prepare the construction safety assessment.
