Black Carbon

As part of the testing of the Area C provision, Amat - on behalf of the Municipality of Milan - has created a project to monitor Black Carbon in atmospheric particulate matter, an indicator of 'proximity' pollution to the traffic source, which allows the evaluation of the the effectiveness of the regulatory policies of this important emission source also in terms of local and specific health risk of the exposed population [WHO, 2013].

The project was divided into four multi-week monitoring campaigns in fixed locations carried out in the different seasons of 2012, accompanied by some monitoring campaigns for the evaluation of personal exposure on pedestrian road journeys.

The measurements of Black Carbon PM10 and PM2.5 concentrations in fixed locations were carried out simultaneously inside and outside Area C in the months of February, May, September and October, in two pairs of sites specifically selected to represent different types of exposure to traffic proximity' (at street level and at the level of the third floor of a building).
