Milan, 30 April 2022 - New systems and shower cubicles, fixtures and ventilation system replaced and increased reception capacity of the laundry. After seven months of work, the public showers in via Anselmo da Baggio present themselves to the city with a completely renewed look. 
The inauguration was held today, as part of the Welfare Forum 2022.

Public showers are a highly requested service dedicated to the homeless: in 2019, before the lockdown due to the pandemic, there were over 97 thousand accesses to the two dedicated points in via Pucci and via Anselmo da Baggio.

The Baggio structure, managed on behalf of the Administration by the Detto Fatto cooperative, is divided into two separate parts which, when fully operational, are dedicated respectively to men, with 10 shower cubicles, and women, with 5 cubicles, which allow access to around 150 people per day with opening hours from 9am to 18pm, from Monday to Saturday. 
The works for the redevelopment of the interior - costing around 300 thousand euros - were organized in such a way as to allow continuity of the service and avoid closure. Since last month, however, the external renovation of the facades, courtyards and roof has been proceeding for a further expense of 206 thousand euros. 
Access is free, subject to membership, and allows you to use the showers, but also the laundry (two washing machines and two dryers available) and a cloakroom dedicated to women. There are currently around 4 thousand members who access the public service, but in recent years the Administration has worked hard on integration with the Milanese private social and third sector entities that offer the same service, with the awareness that satisfying a need as primary as the shower can be an opportunity to get in touch and build a relationship. 

To try to engage the homeless and direct them towards a path of re-inclusion, a social desk managed by Caritas Ambrosiana is active every morning, from Monday to Friday, which orients users by presenting the city's offer of opportunities dedicated to the most vulnerable, from accommodation to economic contributions. 

Renovation work on the public showers in via Pucci is also expected to start in the next few weeks. The redevelopment of the spaces will involve 27 shower cubicles and 7 bathrooms, but also the renovation of the spaces for welcoming users, the day center and the cloakroom, for an investment of around 670 thousand euros.
